Why mentor profiles are private

The mentors in the South-East Queensland network are senior operators. Current and former chief executives, managing directors, chairs, and specialist executives, most of them still active in some capacity. They take mentor engagements selectively, when a brief comes along that matches what they've spent their career building and the client is someone they want to invest time in. Running a mentoring practice is not what they do. Being listed in a public directory of available mentors is not something they want.

That privacy is theirs, not ours. A senior operator who appears on a public mentor list deals with cold approaches from people who haven't read their background, mismatched expectations from buyers who want something different from what they offer, and the kind of low-quality enquiry that wastes time and erodes the goodwill that makes the relationship work. They've earned the right to consider specific briefs rather than be available to anyone with a search engine. Respecting that is what keeps them in the network.

There's also a quality dynamic at work. Public mentor directories tend to attract mentors who need to advertise. The mentors this network is built around generally don't need to advertise. They're senior enough that work comes to them through trust, referral, and relationships built over decades. Keeping the network private is part of what keeps the quality of the network high. The moment it becomes a public directory, it starts attracting a different kind of mentor.

What you get instead

A client engaging Business Mentors Brisbane doesn't browse a list and choose. They receive a written shortlist pack, prepared specifically for their brief, presenting three vetted mentors selected because their operating background connects to what the brief calls for. Each mentor in the pack is covered in enough depth to prepare the client for a real conversation:

  • A photo of the mentor, included with their consent for this specific brief
  • A briefing bio written by John, not the mentor's own CV summary: what they've actually done, the businesses they've run, the situations they've navigated personally
  • The operating experience that connects directly to the client's brief
  • Industry exposure and sector background
  • Working style and how they tend to run an engagement
  • An indicative session fee range

The pack also carries John's view on which of the three is the strongest fit for this specific brief, and his reasoning for that assessment.

This is more useful than a directory for two reasons. First, the shortlist is built for the brief. The client isn't reading forty profiles trying to work out which three might be relevant. Second, what the pack contains is an honest account of what each mentor has actually done, written by someone who has assessed that background against a specific brief, which is more useful than a self-written profile optimised to attract enquiries. The matching does the work of identifying the right three. The pack does the work of preparing the client to make a good choice from them.

How to see the shortlist

The shortlist is delivered after the engagement letter is signed and the deposit has cleared. The first call is free and doesn't commit you to anything. It's where we work out whether the model is the right fit for your situation and what the brief looks like. If you engage, the search runs for around two weeks and the shortlist pack arrives at the end of that process.

If you want a sense of the kinds of mentors in the network without engaging, the closest publicly available indication is the Mentor types page. Each of the eight categories there describes the kind of operating background we typically look for in that category. The actual people sit behind the search, not behind a login.
